Role of the Session Chair/Facilitator
The role of Session Chairs/Facilitators is much more than just timekeeper. Here
are some steps to organize and facilitate your session to bring out audience participation.
In Preparation for the Session:
- Ensure discussants receive copies of the papers.
- Inform presenters of the technology available for their session.
- Inform presenters and discussants of time limitations during the session.
- Allow sufficient time for general discussion and questions at the conclusion of
the presentations.
- Contact the presenters in advance of the symposium to make sure that they are
appropriately prepared for their presentations
- Work with discussants to establish time frames and guidelines.
During the Session
- Start out with a few words about the subject matter of the session and how each
paper will contribute toward exploring that research domain.
- Create an informal first-name atmosphere in the session to encourage discussion.
- Enforce time limits to ensure all presenters have an equal opportunity to present.
- Watch the clock to ensure that your session concludes at the appropriate time.
At the Conclusion of the Session
- Solicit applause for the presenters.
- Thank presenters, discussants, and the audience for their participation.
